Well Family Weekend seems to have been a success. Families and Juniors began arriving Friday evening and went through to this evening. The major activity they have been undertaking has been clearing the environs of Newtondale Halt. A large amount of brushwood (which we had cut down last month) was burnt, opening out views from and of the trains. Another party was tidying the lineside of rotten timber and scrub. A new wire fence has been installed and the old leaning timber fence to the Halt recovered. The broken fence near the adjacent underbridge has also been repaired and made secure.
Beth provided dinner for 18 of the volunteers from the family weekend who were camping in the paddock over night. The General Room was a bit cramped but everyone seemed to enjoy themselves.
At Levisham, work has continued along the lineside cutting down scrub and putting it into piles for disposal later. Stephen has continued using the mini digger to level the emerging spoil heaps. The end result is a nice neat lineside.
Brian has continued making the new level crossing gate – it now even looks like one following its fitting together! Lesley has been busy painting the top coat on the platform bench, undercoating Brian’s new gate plus cleaning down and priming the castings for the new NER ground signal for the south of the station.
Weighbidge Teas have had a steady weekend tending their wares, keeping the loco crews supplied with drinks and cakes and sending supplies to Newtondale Halt.
