23rd/24th February 2013

Its snowing again, fortunately just light snow showers which have not amounted to anything.
On the up platform we have dug out for the new foundation for the lamp room. This has involved modifying the dock with a new concrete cross beam (an old Wombled concrete sleeper) to support the deck. It was then time to get the concrete base down so it was out with the mixers, again.
Down the yard at the crane base we have laid the concrete block walls and central pier. These blocks are very large and heavy but do the job. As they are hollow they have also need to be filled with concrete.
We have managed, after 4 months, to get a fire lit. Even then it took some doing but once alight we kept it going all weekend and disposed of the brash opposite the cottages. In the General Room, we have cleared out all the winter projects and given it a very good clean and wash down. It was then time for the varnish and 2 coats were applied to the floor and waiting plinth. It is now spick and span and ready for a photo shoot here later this week. In connection with this we have also put some NER advertising posters onto the notice boards around the station, to add to the period feel.
On Sunday we laid the blockwork plinth wall for the lamp room (1 course high), ready for the timber frame to be added next week. In the yard we have backfilled around the crane base and used the remaining spoil to fill the central area. This will have a concrete cap laid once the crane centre pin is lifted into place.
Weighbridge Teas have been open all weekend and had a steady trickle of visitors buying hot drinks, sandwiches, cakes and snacks.
