1st January 2014

We shall start by wishing you a Happy New Year. We had our annual day off/out yesterday (after moving some S&T stores at the end of the station clear of the track relay site!), travelling by train to Goathland. Here it was raining – hard, so we had a cup of tea in the Goods Shed tea room and exchanged pleasantries with some of the Goathland staff. When the rain eased we got out to take some new photos for the updated Goathland Station – A Brief History booklet (more pages of information and photos) before catching the train down to Grosmont. Here we looked at the new signal dolls (posts) on the gantry and looked round the loco sheds. We looked into the shed shop and chatted with ‘Auntie Wainwright’ – John Fletcher, who managed to get some money out of us! We also sampled the wares of the Station Tavern before getting the last train back home.
Today we have been back down the line, burning more scrub between the distant and the outer home signals. After a dry start the weather took turn for the worst with heavy rain and blustery wind. Fortunately the fire was well enough alight to keep going. Lunch was taken undercover in the Pway concrete hut at the distant signal. The hut’s old galvanised window frames have had their old broken glass and putty cleaned out ready for the new glass to go in this weekend.
We now have a couple of days off (at our paid work!) before we are back again down the line for a final clear up before the track is lifted on Monday.
