We have had the Junior Volunteers helping us this weekend. On Saturday they burnt all the scrub near the south end loop points. A lot of this had been cut down before Christmas but had been waiting for staff to become available to burn it. On Sunday they joined us near the Grange, north of the station. Here a lot of cut brash was disposed of. This was cut down last winter but the high fire risk in the spring prevented us burning it then. The cutting side now looks a lot better. There is still some more to do and hopefully they will be with us again in April to deal with the remainder.
We have kept the mini digger working around the station, completing the west side of the ditch north of the station up to the accommodation crossing culvert. Beyond the culvert the ditch is too far from the bank top for the digger to reach. Thanks are due to the crew of 29 on the Saturday for pushing the stored wagons clear of the work site and the crew of 61264 for pulling them back on Sunday.
With up to the culvert complete north of the station, we then dug the ditch from the end of the viewing area behind the tea hut down towards the end of the passing loop. This was only made possible following the scrub burning on the Saturday.
At the station, further fit out work has continued inside the Lamp Room. One of our 12’ platform benches has had a new seat plank fitted (we had one we prepared earlier) as the old one had rotted along its full length. Work has continued on making parts for the new bracket signal. These are small and fiddly but still need making. The gardens have also had a spruce up following the winter and the daffodils look excellent.
Weighbridge Teas had another good weekend and kept the Juniors fed and watered as well.
