12th/13th July 2014

It has been Vintage Vehicle and 60’s music weekend on the railway. We had an excellent selection of vintage and classic cars from the 1930’s through to the 1970’s from the humble Mini to the Rolls Royce. In the paddock we had 5 Divide entertaining us on Saturday and Jive Express, complete with loud suits, on the Sunday. Following the excellent weather on the Saturday, it was perhaps inevitable that the Sunday would produce showers, Jive Express began their concert in the pouring rain! Overall though a great time was had by all and we look forward to next year’s event. Yet again, all the catering outlets were open with extra food having to be brought in on the Sunday to replenish that sold on Saturday.
Around the station painting of the new platform bench timbers has continued, with the first restored bench being sent back to Newtondale Halt on the Sunday where Junior Volunteers were waiting to unload it. A long hand cart, donated to us earlier in the year, has been cleaned down, dosed again with wood preservative (it had woodworm) and then primed. This trolley should help us move the heavy canvas for the marquees around, rather than having to carry them between a pair of us.
With the recent 3 events now past, and the heavy rain overnight on Saturday and Sunday, the grass in the paddock has turned to mud in several places – particularly under the marquees. Consequently we have had to dismantle both marquees on Sunday evening, another late night, to try and give the grass time to recover before next weekend. ‘Why?’ I hear you ask. The reason is that next Sunday we have the Hunmanby silver band coming to play during afternoon. Why not come and enjoy the music, and perhaps have a cream tea at the same time?
