20th/21st September 2014

Well its been a damp, drizzly weekend – so much for the dry sunny one the forecast gave. This weekend we have found a use for our old green scaffold tower – its ideal for making a WW2 guard tower! Add some corrugated iron sides and roof, a touch of camouflage paint and Hey Presto! It doesn’t look too bad, all it needs now are a couple of soldiers to complete the picture – only 3 weeks to go.
Around the station David has continued his work tidying up the platform gardens ready for the winter (it still seems a long way away). He has also been digging out our compost heap, getting good material to improve the soil in the gardens. The firing range area has been strimmed down neatly, as has the station approaches ready for next weekends Steam Gala.
Talking of the Steam Gala, we are having a Real Ale Bar at the station Saturday and Sunday, with beer being served in the General Room. Some round bar tables have been made, in traditional Wombling style using recycled materials. Come and try them out next weekend. Wine and soft drinks will also be available and the Weighbridge will be open for sustenance.
A large number of timber planks have been painted ready for use on a brake van, due at the station imminently for overhaul. One of the stores vans has also been repaired where a section of side had rotted through. The platform trolley has had the screw holes filled, sanded and then the trolley given a full undercoat. Tony has finished cleaning all the platform lamps of flies and spiders and they look much better.
Weighbridge Teas has a good weekend with a large party of walking passing through on Saturday and a group of bikers on the Sunday helping to fill the coffers.
