The Womble fire service was called upon twice this weekend, to deal with small lineside fires north of the station. As I write this blog it’s raining!! Hopefully this will be the last time this year.
On the brake van the south end veranda timber floor was lifted, and all the steelwork framing below cleaned down, primed, undercoated and black glossed. It’s much easier to work down rather than looking up into it at a later stage! The floor is now waiting for the gloss to dry before being reinstated. More light bauxite satin paint has been applied where necessary, to ensure it all has 2 top coats. The final entrance grab handle has been reinstated following painting, as has one of the internal door handles. The south end door lock has been returned from overhaul and reinstated. One of our volunteers has found a firm which can bend, in 2 directions, the steel strip which is needed for the ducket side window frames. Another of our volunteers has taken the strip home to weld it into the correct window shape.
On the station, the platform edge white lines and the garden edging have benefitted from a coat of limewash and look much smarter, and safer, now. The picnic table made for Newtondale Halt was delivered there on Sunday by train and is ready to welcome picnickers. A tatty ¾ mile post from behind the platform there has been brought back for the ‘Womble treatment’ and following a thorough clean down is now in primer. One of the Newtondale Halt name boards has also come back to the station for a repair and repaint.
Weighbridge Teas had a good 3 day weekend at the Steam Gala with a mix of hot and cold foods and drinks served. The bacon and sausage sandwiches sold like the proverbial hot cakes.
