Cor, wot a scorcher! The thermometer hit 26ºC today down at Levisham (in the shade!), but we still kept working. On the lineside north of the Station, new fence rails have been fitted to the posts installed last week; with further rails moved to site for the future. The lineside ditch there has been cleaned out of mud and weed with a mini digger, and it now flows much better.
Back at the Station, the Junior Volunteers have continued working on the shed in the yard. Palings have been fitted over the joints and a start made on installing the hinges for the doors. Further insulation has also been installed, now that the roof is on. The gardeners have been in attendance, with Sweet Peas planted in our allotment whilst elsewhere general tidying up continues.
The main job this weekend was installing land drains in the garden behind the cottages. This land is always wet, even in the summer – hopefully the drains will help cure this problem.
We have been on fire duty today, being called out 3 times to deal with small lineside incidents. This has generally been last year’s dead grass and bracken, but it still needs dealing with.
Weighbridge Teas were busy all weekend selling lots of ice creams, in addition to hot and cold drinks, cakes and sandwiches. They were also selling Scottish fare for the weekend – all the Scotch Pies sold out on Saturday, demand being so great! They will be open next Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the second weekend of the Scottish Branch Line Gala, with all their stocks replenished.
